Phony Plates Leads To Seizure of Drugs, Guns

The Codiac Regional RCMP arrested a 35-year-old man in Moncton after seizing firearms and several types of drugs.

Mounties stopped a vehicle on Main Street for having fake plates on Dec. 15 around 2:30 a.m.

Police say during the search, they noticed a firearm in plain sight and determined the driver to be in violation of his parole.

A thorough search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of two firearms including one concealed restricted firearm that was loaded and a second firearm that was stored in an unsafe manner, according to the RCMP.

Additionally, police found what is believed to be crystal methamphetamine, crack cocaine, fentanyl pills, various types of ammunition, a prohibited weapon and an airsoft gun.

Joshua Carvell of Saint John appeared in Moncton Provincial Court later that day and faces 20 charges.

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 16, at 2 p.m., for a bail hearing.

The 20 charges are as follows:

  • four counts of possession of firearm while prohibited
  • four counts of unauthorized possession in motor vehicle
  • three counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • two counts of careless use of a firearm
  • carrying a concealed weapon
  • possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition
  • obstruction of a peace officer
  • possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking
  • possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking
  • possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking
  • driving while suspended
