Peter MacKay Seeks Conservative Leadership

The man who helped form the Conservative Party of Canada wants to become its leader.

Peter MacKay made the announcement Wednesday on Twitter, saying: “I’m in. Stay tuned.”

MacKay was a Member of Parliament in northern Nova Scotia from 1997 to 2015.

He served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Minister of National Defence and Minister of Foreign Affairs under former prime minister Stephen Harper.

MacKay was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada and agreed to merge with Harper’s Canadian Alliance in 2003, forming the Conservative Party of Canada.

Leadership candidates have until Feb. 27 to enter the race. The Conservatives will elect their next leader in Toronto on June 27.
