The People’s Alliance of New Brunswick says it wants to privatize the retail side of NB Liquor.
The party’s candidate in Saint John-East, Jason Inness, drafted the plan and says the model has proven successful in Alberta.
“There’s jobs involved, there’s new opportunities for small business owners. Of course, consumers win because they get convenience and competition which brings downward pressure on prices.”
The policy also proposes retailers not sell below the wholesale price and that no single company or individual be allowed to own more than 15% of the entire provincial market.
Inness says their proposal also tackles the issue of underage drinking with escalating fines and possible loss of a liquor license if a retailer is caught selling to a minor multiple times.
