New Brunswick’s opposition leader says he is not surprised by the $67-million surplus shown in the audited financial statements for 2017-18.
But Blaine Higgs says it is important for people to remember the statements are based on last year’s figures and do not include current spending.
Higgs told our newsroom Tuesday he believes the statements were “heavily crafted” to make it look good for the upcoming election.
“I’m not suggesting that the audited statements are not credible,” Higgs said. “I’m suggesting that it can be crafted because the federal government can be handing it [the province] money that can ensure that it looks good.”
Higgs said we may have had a surplus last fiscal year but the government is still projecting deficits for the next few years.
“To promise what’s been promised to spend, and with the current level of spending, it’s a point in time that does not reflect the position the Liberal government has put our province in going forward.”
