In a historic win, Patricia Bourque-Chevarie has become the first woman to be mayor of Shediac, New Brunswick.
Bourque-Chevarie takes over for Roger Caissie who served as mayor for seven years and 14 years on Council.
In an interview with Acadia News, Monday night, Bourque-Chevarie says she has butterflies.
“I’m very excited. I’m ready to work for the citizens. I’m very happy with the results,” says Bourque-Chevarie.
She says she has been a part of Council for three mandates and felt it was time to be mayor or possibly step down but had things she wanted to finish.
“So, I said I’m going to go for the mayor and be the first woman mayor in Shediac,” says Bourque-Chevarie. “And here I am.”
She says there a couple of new Councillors on board so she is excited to go work with the team.
Plans in the works involve the recreation centre, trails and green space.
As for her constituents, she says she appreciates the support.
“I had a wonderful team working on the campaign, but at the end of the day it’s the people from the town that gave me their vote,” says Bourque-Chevarie.
Ward 1:
Long-time Councillor Paul R. Boudreau will take a spot, alongside Germain Gallant, Emile Arsenault, Leo Doiron Councillor Janice Cormier as well as Marie O’Brien.
Ward 2:
Incumbent Harry McInroy will take the seat again for Ward 2. He has served since 2023.
Ward 3:
John Steeves was acclaimed.
Ward 4:
Incumbent Joel Despres has taken Ward 4.
