The pandemic has prompted Canadians of all ages to start growing growing their own food.
Alyssa Lebans from MacArthur’s nurseries says current circumstances, people have more time for gardening.
“We’ve definitely seen an increase in awareness over the benefits of purchasing local, in general. As supply chains became overburdened, shipping times were extended and product availability at grocery store and larger chains were limited,” she says.
Lebans says people also have more time, compared to other years where they may have been travelling or running their kids to various activities.
Alyssa Lebans of MacArthur’s nurseries says seed sales have spiked, not just at their shop but across the country.
“Once we were able to reopen our production, we actually shifted it and doubled our normal vegetable production so we would have more vegetable transplants ready,” says Lebans.
She says it doesn’t have to be a very big garden encourages beginners to grow things they enjoy and eat regularly.
