Truckers in Atlantic Canada are saying cargo theft by organised crime from transport trucks is becoming more prevalent and in the last few weeks, two trailers have been stolen in Woodstock and the Moncton area.
The Executive Director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association Jean Marc Picard estimates businesses in New Brunswick are losing tens of millions of dollars.
Picard says a transport truck is usually stopped and the hijackers make off with the trailer which is usually found a day or so later emptied of everything that was inside in Toronto or Montreal.
A new reporting system is being set up. Something similar was tried in Ontario and led to the recovery of 1.4 million dollars worth of stolen goods last year.
