Opioid Deaths In NB Rise in 2017

Some startling opioid statistics were released this month in a Surveillance of Apparent Opioid overdoses in New Brunswick report from the provincial government.

According to stats from the emergency departments at both the Horizon and Vitalité Health Networks, there were 108 visits between May and December last year related to non-suicidal opioid overdoses.

63 per cent per cent were men and around 48 per cent were between 20 and 39 years old.

From Ambulance New Brunswick, Naloxone was administered to 282 suspected opioid overdose patients. 152 responded to the drug. Around 54 per cent were males.

The Chief Coroners office is reporting from January to December of 2017, there were 37 apparent opioid deaths in 2017 and 33 were deemed accidental.

That’s an increase from 2016, when 26 were reported.

Eight were related to fentanyl or other forms of the drug.

61 per cent were men, and 20 per cent were between the ages of 20 and 29.
