Open Sky Cooperative

Yesterday afternoon I had a chance to chat with Shelley Steeves from The United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick, we talked about Open Sky, a small farm on the edge of the Tantramar marshes, Open Sky Co-operative is a community-based organization that works with adults with diverse abilities — including people who are neurodivergent — helping to build meaningful lives through connection, skill-building, and real participation in their community.

What makes Open Sky unique is that the learning happens through real, meaningful activity. Participants grow food, cook healthy meals, care for gardens and the land — and a few animals, that includes two donkeys, a flock of hens, and some very charming rabbits. These aren’t just feel-good experiences; they’re the foundation for building genuine skills and confidence. Open Sky’s programs take a broad view of well-being, supporting people with employment, independent living, and building the kinds of circles of support that help everyone thrive.

One of the ways that vision comes to life is through their retail greenhouse — a social enterprise where participants gain real hands-on experience growing and selling plants in the community. The greenhouse opens for the season on May 1st, and all are invited to stop by. Whether you’re looking for bedding plants, vegetables, or something to brighten up your space, you’ll find it at the Open Sky greenhouse, 12 Folkins Drive, Sackville — and every purchase directly supports their programs and the people in them.
