North End YMCA To Open By Fall Of 2020

Over a decade ago, a group of citizens approached the city about a lack of recreational and community services in Moncton’s North End.

Today many gathered for the groundbreaking for a new YMCA satellite facility along the developing Twin Oaks Drive.

A total of 14 million dollars was contributed by the provincial, federal and city governments, including 2 million for road work.

The YMCA will be responsible for the remaining 3 million of the 15-million dollar facility.

Northwest MLA Ernie Steeves says he’s glad to see all levels of government work together on projects like this.

“Moncton northwest is such a vibrant, growing community and absolutely needed this. The land was set aside years ago behind Evergreen Park School and kind of outgrown that footprint so it’s been about 12 years in the making and it’s finally here,” Steeves says.

YMCA of Greater Moncton CEO Zane Korytko, says the additional recreational facility will be about half the size of the current location.

He says despite a smaller building, they have designed it in a way so they can expand on if needed.

The new facility will feature areas for fitness programs, an indoor splash pad and playground and multi-purpose spaces.
