No Fixed Address awareness event in Centennial Park

MONCTON, N.B. – Officials with YWCA Moncton are hoping an event today will help shine light on the issue of hidden homeless women and children in the region.

No Fixed Address is a family event taking place in Centennial Park until 3 p.m.

Staff and volunteers will be offering free treats and family activities while distributing information and accepting donations for their YWCA housing programs.

Spokesperson Beth Lyons says hidden homelessness is the term used to describe homeless people who exist outside of shelters and transitional housing programs.

“It might be folks that are couch surfing between friends and family. They might be sleeping rough in cars, on park benches or in non-residential buildings that aren’t really safe to be sleeping in.”

In Canada, 80% of people experiencing homelessness are considered ‘hidden’ many of them women and children who aren’t using shelters because of safety concerns.
