‘No Evidence Of A Chronic Water Quality Issue’ At Parlee Beach: Report

The final report on water quality at Parlee Beach in 2017 shows 95 per cent of the time, the water quality was very good.

The report shows out of 148 consecutive daily tests between May 17th, to October 9th, last year, no swimming advisories were issued for eight days, and precautionary advisories were issued for 15 days.

Project Manager Jacques Paynter, FEC, P. Eng, says an infrequent combination of meteorological and oceanographic conditions are responsible for the poor quality days, including wind, and to a lesser degree high tide.

He continues by saying, since New Brunswick had an exceptionally hot Summer 2017, more data will be collected in 2018 to confirm those findings.

The Gallant government has already invested almost $3 million to enhance water quality, and are committing another $760,000 over two years to implement the 14 recommendations in this report.

Those include targeted investigations to verify if on site sewage disposal systems are the source of bacteria, as well as developing a tool for predicting water quality.
