New Speaker Nervous About “Steep Learning Curve”

There is a new Speaker of the Legislative Assembly for New Brunswick.

Restigouche-Chaleur MLA Daniel Guitard was elected this morning when the house resumed.

He was reluctantly dragged to the chair by Premier Brian Gallant and Opposition leader Blaine Higgs, as is the tradition.

Guitard set the tone by basically saying he won’t stand for any tom-foolery in the house.

“I will insist on proper decorum, dignity and respect for this chamber. The office of the speaker demands fairness and firmness.” Guitard said.

Premier Brian Gallant said on behalf of all 49 MLA’s elected he congratulated Guitard on his election as speaker of the house.
