New Moncton Costco Store Takes Step Forward

Plans for a new Costco in Moncton appear to be on track.

At this week’s City Planning Advisory Meeting, several components were approved including the site plan, and layout of the store. Granite Drive and how it is going to connect to Elmwood Drive is also in order.

Deputy Mayor Charles Leger says there are still some questions with regards to traffic, because Elmwood Drive is already quite busy, “The positioning of the store in relation to Elmwood Drive, a lot of the vehicles will be turning in and going down Granite, so I would think there will be some lining up of vehicles on Granite. But in terms of the concerns of the infrastructure on Elmwood Drive, there is concern. When you look at comparing the infrastructure on Elmwood Drive compared to the infrastructure at Trinity, it is totally different and yet we know the volumes of traffic and the delays at Trinity. One could deduct that it may be more than is anticipated, and those are some of the questions, that staff are being asked.”

The Costco will span 154, 000 square feet, on a piece of land north of the Trans Canada near Elmwood Drive. It will also include a gas bar.

Leger says there is still time for the public to submit their views, “There are still some questions, and there is always time for people to give their views with respect to perhaps things that could change some traffic concerns and things along that line, so we always encourage the general public to speak up.”
