New Legislation To Regulate Vaping In Canada Receives Royal Assent

New federal legislation to regulate vaping products at the national level and allow for plain tobacco packaging requirements has officially become law.

The bill, S-5, which received Royal Assent on Wednesday, bans the sale of vaping products to those under the age of 18 and promoting vaping products that appeal to young people like those with dessert or candy flavours. It allows the federal government to implement child-resistant packaging for vaping liquids that contain nicotine.

The bill also introduces amendments to allow the government to fully implement plain and standardized packaging requirements for tobacco products.

Health Canada says research shows this type of packaging reduces the appeal of tobacco products, especially for young people.

Health Canada says in the coming months it will pre-publish proposed rules to require standardized packaging to Canada Gazette for consultation.
