Patients in Moncton who don’t have a primary care provider will soon have another option.
The Mapleton Family Health Team has been created through a partnership with the Horizon Health Network.
The provincial government says it is expected to serve about 700 patients within the next year.
Premier Susan Holt said family health teams are a key part of the province’s health plan.
“This is exactly the kind of solution we need more of, as we work to improve access to health care for New Brunswickers,” Holt said in a government release.
The team currently includes two nurse practitioners who moved to full‑time positions over the summer, along with two administrative staff members. Another nurse practitioner is expected to join later this year.
The province is spending up to $2.4 million on the team as it expands to include allied health professionals such as social workers, dietitians and respiratory therapists.
Health Minister John Dornan said the model is being welcomed by patients and health‑care workers. The government has committed to creating at least 30 collaborative family health teams across New Brunswick over four years.
Margaret Melanson, president and CEO of the Horizon Health Network, said the Mapleton team will play a key role in improving access to care in the Moncton area.
She said the announcement reflects Horizon’s commitment to team‑based, collaborative primary care. Patients without a primary care provider are encouraged to register with NB Health Link
