The new pool at Centennial Park is going to cost $5.4 million, and will be ready for Summer 2019, according to a presentation at Moncton City Council.
Director of Recreation and Leisure Jocelyn Cohoon says this is once again a beach style aquatic facility with a sand area.
“It includes grass, trees, shrubs, things that will support leisure activities, lane swimming, and has a waterspray feature,” says Cohoon. “There’s also space for many other activities all while preserving the natural beauty and qualities of Centennial Park.”
She says the new pool will be about 1.2 million litres, which in context “a large outdoor private swimming pool in someone’s backyard would be in the vicinity of 100,000 litres of water, so about 12 times the size.”
Cohoon says the 1.2 million litre pool can accommodate between 550 and 650 people at once, and the beach house has 14 universal public washroom change areas.
“Staff washroom and shower facility, a lifeguard office, and a storage area for a mechanical and electrical room, so a basic building, but enough change rooms that are universally accessible, inclusive to all our populations to use with ease,” says Cohoon.
Cohoon says in the past, the pool attracted on average 25,000 visitors per year, including youth and families from all over the tri community area, and also some tourists.
