New Anglophone East District Education Council To Be Sworn In Today

The new Anglophone East District Education Council is meeting in Fredericton today.

They’re taking part in various sessions as they prepare themselves for the next four year.

Angela Lawson was re-elected for a second term on the council on May 9th.

She says, “It will be nice to sit with new DEC members and see where their passions lie. In my experience, I’ve found that everyone comes onboard with the different things they want to achieve throughout the year and that always helps us to be successful.”

One issue she expects will come up at future meetings is French Immersion, because Premier Gallant made the platform promise that it would return to an earlier grade, “For us as Councillors, that isn’t our decision. We don’t really have any impact or insight on when that decision will be made, and what that will entail What is important to us is to make sure whatever is done, is most successful for our students.”

She says there are specific things that council doesn’t do, “We don’t get involved in District staffing issues and we don’t get involved in day to day operations. We don’t talk about a specific student at any time, we talk about students as a whole.

Some of the things council will do, are setting policies and procedures to direct the Superintendent on how the District should operate, approving budgets, and coming up with strategic plans and mission statements.

A swearing in ceremony will also be held as a part of today’s meetings.

The District Education Council will meet again on Tuesday, June 14th.
