NB Needs More Political Will To Protect Wildlife

Half of the wildlife species across the country are declining according to a report from WWF Canada and the situation is just as dire in New Brunswick.

WWF Canada spokesperson Simon Mitchell says a number of species are threatened in the province including the piping plover due to such factors as human disturbance and climate change.

The brown bat used to be quite common in the province but Mitchell says its numbers have dropped 94 percent over a recent three year period mainly due to white nose syndrome.

Mitchell says marine species are also at risk including the North Atlantic Right Whale which has attracted much attention and government intervention.

He adds the province needs more protected natural areas to help species flourish.

Mitchell says greater political will is also needed to make changes including better utilization of the Species-at-Risk Act.
