NB Cottage Market Heating Up Again

The cottage market along the Northumberland Strait could be heating up again and attracting more Americans.

A lower Canadian dollar may be behind a greater interest in recreational properties.

Owner/Broker Fern Gagnon with Re/Max Quality Real Estate says buyers are attracted by much lower prices here for properties on the waterfront compared to other areas like Ontario or Quebec.

“They were originally from here or those who are possibly wanting to retire. They realize they will find good value,” says Gagnon.

About 5 years ago, Gagnon says the cottage market was red-hot with many interested buyers from local baby boomers to Americans.

He adds the market began to cool after the loonie spiked and a series of storm surges damaged parts of the Northumberland Strait coastline.
