National Retailers Look For Workers During COVID-19

As many companies lay off employees during the COVID-19 outbreak, others are looking for more workers.

Loblaw is recruiting temporary workers at its stores in the Atlantic region, including Atlantic Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart and NoFrills.

The focus is on hiring store clerks, merchandisers, assemblers, pharmacists and pharmacy assistants.

Mark Wilson, head of human resources for Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart, said their supply chain is strong and they want to keep it that way.

“We know people are relying on our stores to be open, stocked and ready to serve. In order to keep things running smoothly, we need a full team in stores and distribution centres. We also need to be able to give our current team a break,” said Wilson in a news release.

Wilson said they have reached out to the retail industry and many large employers who have been impacted by the pandemic.

“We don’t know how much help we’ll need, or where, but if there are people looking to be employed and paid right now, maybe we can help each other out,” he said.

Walmart Canada is also looking to hire 10,000 more associates in its stores and distribution centres across the country, while Sobeys is also looking to hire more part-time staff.
