National Railway Day Greeted With Optimism

The president of Transport Action Atlantic is feeling much better about passenger rail travel this year as Canada marks National Railway Day.

On this date in 1885, the last spike ceremony marked a continuous rail link from coast to coast.

Ted Bartlett says with VIA Rail under new management, the company seems to be more committed to the Maritimes.

For example, he says VIA is adding three additional roundtrips of the Ocean train during the upcoming holiday season.

Bartlett says it’s still early to make judgements but the new VIA management seems to be a breath of fresh air with a different philosophy.

Passenger service on VIA Rail’s Ocean train through New Brunswick was cut in half two years ago and was in danger of being eliminated entirely.
