On Saturday over Twitter, New Brunswick RCMP acknowledged that the lands in which the province is situated are the unceded and unsurrendered traditional territory of the Wǝlastǝkwiyik/Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq/Mi’kmaw and Peskotomuhkatiyik/Peskotomuhkati.
In several tweets, the police service said it is, “committed to strengthening relationships between the RCMP and Indigenous communities.”
“We prioritize the education and awareness of all employees in fostering a change in the culture of the RCMP to attain and promote mutual respect, trust, and open communication with Indigenous communities,” another tweet read.
This comes after New Brunswick government employees were ordered to stop territorial or title acknowledgments in relation to First Nations lands on Thursday.
