N.B. Municipalities Face Big Challenges

Aging infrastructure, extreme weather events and doctor recruitment.

Those were just some of the topics discussed at the Union of the Municipalities of New Brunswick’s recent conference in Fredericton.

Margot Cragg, executive director of the UMNB, said more than 200 delegates took part, including mayors and councillors from across the province.

“We bring together politicians from the province and leaders in the business community that think that local issues really matter to them to really work at changing the agenda and driving forward some of the priorities for municipalities and their residents,” Cragg told our newsroom.

Cragg said municipal governments are facing many big challenges and cannot address them alone.

“Everything from aging infrastructure to the effects of climate change on that infrastructure to a changing demographics,” she said, “as our populations get older and we need new services and a different approach from our municipalities.

Cragg said municipalities want to work with the next government — no matter the party — to address the challenges.
