N.B. Jobless Rate Drops Slightly

New Brunswick’s unemployment rate fell slightly in November, even with fewer jobs in the province.

The latest labour force survey from Statistics Canada shows the province added 100 part-time jobs and lost 500 full-time positions.

But the unemployment rate dropped to eight per cent from 8.1 per cent in October as fewer people looked for work, according to the report released Friday.

On a year-over-year basis, total employment in New Brunswick and the unemployment rate remained steady.

Meanwhile, the national unemployment rate rose to 5.9 per cent as employment fell by 71,000.

Declines in employment were recorded both in the goods-producing sector, specifically in manufacturing and natural resources, as well as in the services-producing sector, notably in public administration.

The number of private-sector employees was down, while self-employment and public-sector employment held steady.
