N.B. increases monthly comfort and clothing allowance

Nursing home and special care home residents will now get a larger comfort and clothing allowance.

In a news release Monday, the province said it is setting aside an extra $7.6 million each year.

Nursing home residents will now receive $150 a month, up from $108 a month currently, according to the release.

Special care home residents and eligible social assistance recipients will get $190 a month compared to $135 currently.

“This increase to the comfort and clothing allowance will ensure seniors feel more at home, enabling them to purchase items and services that will bring some cheer,” Mike Keating, interim CEO of the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes, said in the release.

Jan Seely, who heads the New Brunswick Special Care Home Association, expressed similar sentiments.

“This extra amount will help with their day-to-day expenses and hopefully bring them some added enjoyment and independence that will improve their overall well-being and quality of life,” said Seely.

The increase will take effect on Sept. 1.
