The community of Campbellton is mourning the death of a Councillor and his wife.
Gaëtan Cormier and his wife, Rose-Marie Charest, were killed in a snowmobile crash over the weekend.
In a news release, RCMP say the crash happened on February 8 on Route 11 in Dalhousie Junction.
It states that a 61-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, died of their injuries after the snowmobile rolled over. both from Campbellton, N.B., have died following a single-snowmobile crash in Dalhousie Junction, N.B.
Members of the Campbellton Fire Department and Ambulance New Brunswick attended the scene.
Acting Mayor Luc Couturier says Cormier was a dedicated member of the municipal council.
Before his election to the Campbellton Regional Community Council in November 2022, he served as alderman for the former Village of Atholville from 2012 to 2022.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague from the municipal council,” said the acting mayor, Luc Couturier. “Gaëtan was a dedicated member of the city council, with a long experience of community engagement, particularly in his community of Atholville.”
Couturier adds that this is not only a tragedy for the couple’s family and friends, but also for the Campbellton community.
Cormier was very involved as a volunteer firefighter in the Village of Atholville for 15 years, and he also held various positions in tourism, including the Atholville Winter Carnival and the Atholville Small Dry Wood Committee, among others.
His wife was a retired employee of the Campbellton Regional Hospital.
Community flags are currently being flown in Campbellton in tribute to Cormier and his wife.
