N.B. byelections set for June 22, nomination deadline passes

The candidates are now set for the upcoming byelections in the province.

Friday was the deadline for submitting nomination papers.

Byelections will be held for Grand Lake, where three councillors are needed for Ward 2, Nashwaak, where one councillor is needed for Ward 2 and Saint Andrews, where four councillors are needed for Ward 3.

Councillors in Ward 2 of Grand-Bouctouche and Ward 7 of Nashwaak were acclaimed, with only one candidate offering for each contest.

Elections NB Spokesperson Paul Harpelle says byelections will be held on June 22.

One day of advance voting is scheduled for Saturday, June 13. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

He added that it’s very similar to municipal election day on May 11, “The only difference is it is very specific wards and there is only that one contest in place. The process will look the same, just on a smaller scale.”

The list of candidates running in each municipality is available on Elections New Brunswick’s website. Candidates have until 5 p.m. on Monday, June 1, to withdraw their name.

“Typically, twice a year, in between the general elections, the pattern has been to hold two sets of byelections. So in theory, we could be looking at doing something late October or early November, and that gives all of the new councils a chance to get sworn in and start doing their duties. It’s not unusual to have some people find out that it is not what they were expecting. So we will be prepared to hold byelections if necessary this fall,” Harpelle added.
