Moncton city council is considering the idea of implementing a multi-use trail along Mountain road.
This comes after the city decided to eliminate the road’s bicycle lanes in order to convert it back to 4 lanes.
Councillor Bryan Butler says the decision sent city engineers back to the drawing board.
“We’re going to put the engineering guys to work. Then they’re going go back and try to come up with a design and then they’ll present it to council and see how much it’s going to cost,” he says.
The city is currently looking at safer alternatives, including a multi-purpose trail along Mountain road.
Butler thinks that would be a great idea and a much safer alternative to the existing bicycle lanes.
“Cyclists have a right to safety and I think that’s important, and to put a line on the road and say ‘okay, now you’re safe’, I was never into that, I always thought that was the wrong approach,” he says.
The trail would be shared by both cyclists and pedestrians and would run along the outside of the road.
