Monuments At Centennial Park To Get A Makeover

Aging monuments that can be found at the entrance of Centennial Park will get an upgrade this year.

CF-100 Canuck airplane, Anchor from the HMCS Magnificent, Sherman Tank and the 5720 locomotive are all going to be refurbished.

Director of Parks with the City of Moncton Dan Hicks says all of the items have been placed at various times over the years, including the Avro Aero plane that was erected in 1956, “After 66 years on a pedestal, the plane’s finishes have deteriorated and faded and the windscreen is cracked. There are a few cosmetic items. It is showing its age at this point.”

Consultants are currently working on the best process for the refurbishments, but Hicks says they are hoping to get the work started mid summer or into the fall.

“500, 000 was approved in the Capital budget in 2021 for the project, but that also includes signage, landscaping and other items. After the approval, we were also made aware of some federal funding that we could possibly access. We made our applications and we are hopeful we will be approved for that for our 2022 construction. It is through Veterans Affairs and it is $25, 000.”\

The construction area will be cordoned off, but it shouldn’t impede access to the park.
