Monument To Honour Riverview Naval History

A special ceremony to celebrate the naval history in Riverview will be held this month.

A monument that stands about six feet tall and four feet wide will be unveiled to recognize the HMCS Coverdale and those who served at the naval base.

Three large stones that were preserved from the old Gunningsville Bridge have been used to create the monument.

Paul Belliveau, Second Vice President for the Riverview Veterans and Armed Forces Association, says in the 1940’s the federal government decided to set up a number of high frequency directional finding stations across the Atlantic region to monitor German submarines and Coverdale was one of them.

The station officially closed its doors in 1971.

A special unveiling ceremony will be held on October 25th at 2-pm at the Coverdale Commons on Hillsborough Road.
