The River of Pride in Greater Moncton is responding to the City’s decision not to have rainbow crosswalks this year.
Project Coordinator Charles MacDougall says they are disappointed, but they understand their decision, “It is unfortunate, and we hope that the Transportation Association of Canada can come up with a result sooner rather than later and even more importantly a result that includes the LGBTQ+ community.”
Last year, TAC launched a study into decorative Crosswalks, but they say there wasn’t enough data to development new guidelines.
They’ll propose a new project in the fall to complete research into the safety impacts.
MacDougall says they know that many people in the community view these crosswalks as a ray of hope.
The Town of Riverview and City of Dieppe will both be repainting the rainbow crosswalks they had last year.
In Riverview, they’ll be found on Cleveland Ave and Fatima Drive, and a third will be added at Riverview High.
In Dieppe, the colourful crosswalks will be at the intersection of Marché Street and Gauvin Road.
MacDougall adds, “To see Moncton being the only municipality in the region regress on their practice, it is disappointing.”
The City of Moncton, through Downtown Moncton Centreville Inc, will be putting up rainbow banners again this year. They are expected to go up on July 7th.
