Today marks the final day of Moncton Pride 2019.
The parade will start at 1:30 and thousands will march Main Street from Foundry to Downing.
River of Pride project coordinator, Charles MacDougall says this year they’re honouring parade marshal Denise Doiron.
“She went through the LGBTQ purge, which was a systematic discrimination and firing of people in our community who worked for the armed forces, the RCMP and in the civil service. So she would have been fired in the 1980s just for being a lesbian,” MacDougall says.
MacDougall says she and some of her colleagues mounted a campaign against the federal government and received a formal apology.
There will also be a free concert at Riverfront Park from 8:30pm to 12:30 am that will feature a number of other special guests.
This year’s pride week was held a week later due to the many festivities of the World Acadian Congress
However, MacDougall says it could have some advantages.
“There might be folks that will miss out on it this year but it also gives us an opportunity to say ‘hi’ to the people that are moving here, incoming students or anyone else, they’ll have the chance this year to get a mighty colourful introduction,” he says.
MacDougall says the event will be loud and a lot of fun for everyone.
A reminder that some roads may be closed for the festivities.
