Moncton Hikes Water and Sewer Bills

An increase in water and sewer rates has become an annual tradition in the City of Moncton and 2016 will be no exception.

City Council has agreed to hike utilities by 3.5 percent next year which translates to about $30 for the average Moncton household.

Moncton chief financial officer John Martin says the spike is needed to offset the steep number of watermain breaks due to aging pipes and paying down the second reservoir project at Turtle Creek.

The Greater Moncton Sewerage Commission is also facing upgrades under federally-mandated standards by 2020.
