Kilts will be the clothing of choice this week for many, who are taking part in the 12th annual Moncton Highland Games and Scottish Festival.
It officially kicks off tonight at 7pm with a concert in Riverfront Park.
Member of the Greater Moncton Scottish Association Ian Gunn says local and visiting athletes will compete in a number of events including stone put and hammers.
“The pipers will be competing all day long. There’s also dancing, which goes on all day. Other attractions will be falconry, chainsaw carver, Blacksmith will be on site this year, archery, fly casting, shearing sheep, and spinning wool.”
There will be performances each night and Saturday will be the day of competitions. You can learn about the various events, including caber toss, throwing weights for height and distance, and sheaf toss.
Visitors can enjoy watching sheep dog trials, visiting various Clans, meeting highland cattle, and antique military vehicles.
The festival wraps up on Sunday with a Kirking of the Tartan service at Trinity United Church, Old Coach Road.
The Games grounds (Hal Betts Sportsplex) opens at 8:30am; admission is $10 adults, $8 students/seniors, and $25 for a family (children 12 and under are free, as are members of the military and RCMP who show ID).
