Students from Harrison Trimble High School are learning valuable lessons about helping those less fortunate as they gear up for a trip to Haiti this March.
Molly Touchie is a Grade 11 student there and she says they will be going to Haiti to organize a soccer tournament for children as well as bring goats to provide economic help to Haitians.
That group was organized after the 2010 earthquake by Teachers and alumni of Harrison Trimble high school.
Touchie says the students are inspired by English teacher Art Moore who spearheads the program.
“I had a lot of respect for my teacher I just thought he was a great man, and just the idea of helping now, I believe it’s going to be life changing,” says Touchie. “I believe I’m going to experience a bit of culture shock but it’s just going to be eye opening.”
Touchie says she was intrigued by the program when she first heard about it from Moore in Grade 9.
“He had done the mission before and I always wanted to be involved,” says Touchie. “But it wasn’t until this year that I talked to a girl who was going and she kinda convinced me to actually commit.”
Touchie says the students are expected to raise $1,000 dollars each on top of the cost of getting there.
She adds they are looking for donations of either money or used or new soccer equipment including balls, and team sets of jerseys.
