The majority of New Brunswickers have pets which is why when fire strikes a home, the family cat or dog and its safety becomes a major concern.
Oaks Vet Clinic has provided the Moncton Fire Department with new devices to use to help save the lives of pets.
Moncton deputy fire chief Don McCabe says firefighters have been receiving training this week.
“We received some pet masks which are designed to fit over the snouts of dogs and cats to deliver oxygen to them.”
McCabe says firefighters had previously been using bags of oxygen to help struggling pets after fires.
He adds it was only recently that they were made aware of specialized oxygen masks for animals.
