A Labrador Retriever is an important member of the Moncton Fire Department.
That’s according to Fire Prevention Chief Charles Leblanc, who says Magic is officially called an “Accelerant Detection Canine.”
Leblanc says Magic looks for any type of flammable liquid with hydrocarbons like gasoline, oil and diesel.
“Magic is used in most of our fires, whether we deem them to be suspicious in nature, or possibly criminal in nature,” says Leblanc. “We use Magic on a daily basis at most of our fire scenes to basically eliminate the fact that flammable liquids were utilized to start the fire.”
Leblanc says Magic can detect any petroleum based products.
“If Magic comes across some sort of accelerants he is trained for, Magic basically sits,” says Leblanc. “And then I ask him the command to basically show me where it is, and he points his nose towards that and then he gets rewarded.”
Leblanc says Magic has been serving for five years, and is expected to work for another five if all goes well.
