The City of Moncton has enjoyed strong growth in building permits in the second quarter of this year – the best showing for that period in 10 years.
Although the Downtown Centre comprised $75 million of the $122 million total, the quarter was still up by 24 percent over last year.
Moncton economic development director Kevin Silliker says large projects often fuel additional growth.
“Commercial development is certainly important to us. Again that shows that private corporations, investors and developers investing in our economy. That’s what we want to see absolutely,” she notes.
Silliker cites some recent examples including the redevelopment of the Tuttle Brothers building and the revitalization of the Empire Block on Main Street.
Residential building permits were also strong in the second quarter with a good mix of single family homes, duplexes, row houses and apartments.
