Moncton Council Approves Repairs For Riverbank Damaged By Erosion

A 210-metre stretch of bank along the Petitcodiac River must be reinforced to repair the damages caused by erosion.

The construction intended to protect and preserve the Riverfront Trail between Bore Park and the former Moncton Wharf Boardwalk, was approved by Moncton City Council on Monday night.

Moncton’s director of park operations, Dan Hicks, told councillors that observations in 2021 found erosion along the river bank had begun to cause structural issues up the river.

Construction is expected to start in the spring and could last about four to six weeks, Hicks told council.

Before bringing the matter to a public meeting, the city requested a formal response from the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper regarding the project. City manager Marc Landry read the written response to council, which noted they did not oppose the project. However, it did advise council to prioritize nature-based solutions for future decisions.

The next steps for the project require correspondence to be sent to the Province of New Brunswick for funding assistance to stabilize the banks of the Petitcodiac River. An estimated cost for repairing the banks along the 210-metre stretch was not released.
