Moncton City Council Sticking With Its Decision To Give Land To The YWCA

Moncton City Council reaffirmed its year old decision to provide the YWCA with land from Birchmount Park to build a home for young pregnant women last night at their meeting.

They were challenged by Danny Hicks, a resident of the city who claimed the land was designated to be made into a park when it was donated in the 1950s.

Councillor Dawn Arnold argued the City’s needs have changed since then, and the YWCA project needs the space more.

“I also see the perfect location for a much needed home for young women who need a second chance in life,” says Arnold. “A location that is close to bus lines, a community college, retail and work opportunities. I see a location that will provide a caring and nurturing community to raise children in in.”

Arnold also said the plans do include keeping some green space, and suggested that while everyone could play the “blame game” she would prefer if everyone simply “stood up and did the right thing.”
