Moncton City Council Hearing Both Sides Of Water Fluoridation Issue

Moncton City Council is hearing both sides of the water fluoridation issue today.

New Brunswick Dental Society Vice President Dr. Suzanne Drapeau-McNally is laying out the evidence that fluoride should be reintroduced into the water supply.

She says every one of the 50 dentists in the Greater Moncton area are seeing the negative impact on tooth health since the ban went into effect five years ago.

“Especially the older ones, they were practicing before with the fluoride, and they have noticed quite a change in the number of [tooth] decays,” says Dr. Drapeau-McNally.

She says says fluoride in the amounts they want in the water is completely safe.

“With 0.7 parts per million, a 19-year old man needs to drink 9,728 glasses of water in one sitting to reach a level that would be dangerous,” says Dr. Drapeau-McNally.

She says an infant would have to drink 300 glasses in order to reach a dangerous level, adding it’s a minimal amount, and provides benefits to everyone.
