Moncton City Council Approves Slightly Deeper East End Pool For $62,000

Moncton City Council approved increasing the depth of the East End pool from 1.1 metres to 1.5 metres in part of it, in response to concerns brought forward by residents and some councillors.

General Manager of Recreation, Culture and Events Catherine Dallaire says despite the extra work, the pool is still on schedule for completion by summer 2019.

“There is a cost implication of approximately $62,000 and we have been able to provide the deeper end of the swimming pool, so in the lane portion of the pool it will go from 1.1 metres, to 1.5 metres,” says Dallaire.

She says the additional money will cover all costs of this extra work.

“So everything from design, to any of the geo technical potential changes, to any of the material costs, so additional concrete, additional rebar,” says Dallaire. “As well as any excavation or any other material changes to the project.”

Dallaire adds there is a contingency fund of $90,000 for this project as well.

“We are building this pool in an area where there are some stability issues with respect to the soil,” says Dallaire. “Until the engineers get in there, and the contractor gets in there, we’re not quite sure what they could find, so establishing a contingency from the outset was very important.”

The motion was approved 8 – 1 with Councillors Blair Lawrence, and Paulette Theriault absent.

The sole vote against was Councillor Paul Pellerin – who supports the project, but couldn’t vote in favour because of the lack of details in Thursday’s presentation.
