A follow up meeting will be done tonight, to hold further discussions into concerns over the speed limit in front of Magnetic Hill School.
The Minister of Transportation Bill Fraser will meet with members of the Anglophone East District Education Council.
Council member Angela Lawson says the DEC conducted their own study, and it found that the speed should be reduced from 70km/h to 50 km/h , “We want to make sure the appropriate people are making the final decision, because this is really out of our hands. This is not a District Education Council issue. We have stepped in because the Department is not offering help to the school and ultimately student safety does fall into our mandate.”
Lawson says their study was sent to the Minister’s office in August and they have had adequate time to review it, “We have all reviewed the report. It is clear that reducing the speed limit is more than justified, so we are looking at the next steps from the department on when they plan to take action on this.”
Lawson adds there some specific questions that they will be asking the Minister, “Has it been reviewed by those who need to review it? We would also like to know, who is it being reviewed by, and their credentials, to be making a decision, because we hired an expert in this field.”
The meeting between the Minister and the DEC will be held during a private session during tonight’s Anglophone East District Education Council meeting.
