Midwives Could Save Province Money

Financial savings are just one benefit of an expanded midwife care system in New Brunswick, according to Families for Midwives.

They are an advocacy group trying to get public funding to support an expansion of the midwife system.

Families for Midwives says $840, 000 a year could be saved if only 10 percent of the 7000 births across the province each year are done by midwives.

They help reduce the time spent in hospitals, and the number of instrument assisted births – which translates into savings of $1200 per birth by a midwife.

Families for Midwives says each midwife would attend 40 births per year, which means adding 18 midwives would achieve the goal of increasing access to New Brunswick families.
