The third phase of renovations at Harrison Trimble High School is underway.
Minister Cathy Rogers was given the tour earlier today, of the work that has been done so far.
One of the newest additions to the school is a welding program..
This final investment by the provincial government for the mid life upgrade, is almost $3.5 million and includes new flooring, lighting and ventilation in the school.
Director of Finance and Administration Aubrey Kirkpatrick says students who are interested in the trades will also be able to take advantage of the new welding program,”The school has never had that program before. There will be a welding shop with exterior access, and you will be able to bring equipment and materials in to have projects built. It was a program that wasn’t offered because of the building itself. When we looked at what needed to be done at the school, the welding program was something that we added in.”
He says there has been a lack of skilled trades people in the provinces, especially during the busy construction seasons, and by introducing this to students now. It will mean that students are well set for the future.
The school has created a family studies department and culinary space, new administrative area and improvements to the music room and vocational areas.
Harrison Trimble was built in 1961 and has more than 1000 students.
The mid-life upgrade began in 2015 and is expected to be completed in the fall.
Kirkpatrick says this midlife upgrade will help to add 20 to 30 years to the lifespan of the school.
