The president of Codiac Soccer believes FIFA’s announcement that the World Cup is coming to Canada in 2026 is going to create a lot of buzz over the next few years.
Derek Smith thinks this could really raise the profile of the sport.
“I strongly believe that will continue growth in the sport. More and more children will start playing and probably more and more adults will start watching it too,” he says.
Although Canada has never hosted the Men’s World Cup, the Women’s World Cup was here in 2015 with several matches played at Moncton Stadium.
Smith say those matches were well attended and helped generate a greater interest in soccer.
Along with the United States and Mexico, Canada will play host to FIFA in 2026 with matches in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
