Maple Syrup Producer Says Upcoming Season Hard To Predict

The upcoming maple syrup season is currently on the minds of many.

President of Briggs Maples David Briggs says it’s hard to say what the season will look like, “As long as the weather doesn’t start warming up and then stay really warm, it might drag on to be a decent year. It is always too hard to predict.”

Around 12,000 sugar maples on private and crown land, located near Fundy Park, in Albert County, New Brunswick are tapped by the Briggs Family each year..

Tree tapping will usually begin once the daytime temperatures rise above freezing, and the sap often begins to flow. That can come anytime between mid-February and mid- March.

Briggs says, “The weather is changing. It has changed a lot since I was younger. Our seasons seems to be starting earlier than they used to.”

But in the last week, we’re seeing more seasonable temperatures, in the double digits below zero, “Looks like we are going to get some winter yet. The cold has returned, so I don’t know if we will have any anticipation of early runs anytime soon, but tapping is certainly on the minds of many people right now,” Briggs says.

Briggs Maples is currently in the process of relocating its retail store from the Chocolate River Station in Riverview to the Main Street in Hillsborough.
