Longtime Moncton City Councillor Passes Away

Longtime Moncton City Councillor Brian Hicks passed away on Friday.

Hicks spent 20 years as the representative for the constituents of Ward 3 but was seen as a voice for all Monctonians.

He ran in the Moncton mayoral race in 2016 but was defeated by Dawn Arnold. Hicks reclaimed his Ward 3 seat in the 2018 byelections after the position became vacant when Rob McKee was elected as the Liberal MLA for Moncton Centre.

Hicks announced earlier this year he would not re-offer in the Spring Municipal Elections.

He was an active member of the community, spending time as the President of Friends of the Trojans, and as a member of the Board of Directors of MMHA and the Midget AAA Flyers, according to his obituary. Hicks was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Several of his former colleagues expressed their sadness through social media.

“I am beyond sad. Throughout the many many years we served on Council together, I could always count on his logic, kindness, dedication to research, impeccable integrity and genuine love for our city. He was my friend and I shall miss him greatly. RIP Brian,” former Moncton City Councillor Pierre Boudreau posted on Facebook.

“Remembering our great friend Brian Hicks this evening who was such a passionate member of City Council for over two decades,” posted former councillor and current MLA for Moncton South, Greg Turner.
