Local Swimmers Headed To Canada Games

Athletes from across the province will be headed to the Canada Games in Winnipeg.

That includes 14 year old Brooklyn Douthwright from Riverview.

Qualifying meets were held in Saint John this past weekend, and Douthwright swam in the under 15 females category.

She says the Team New Brunswick swim team is made up of twelve females, twelve males, two para and two special Olympics athletes and two alternates.

Her hope is that this may help to lead her to the Olympics in 2020, “They like to say that Canada Games is a stepping stone to national meets, and qualifiers for Olympics and higher level national meets.”

Douthwright was the youngest swimmer to cross the Northumberland Strait in 2015.

She swims with the Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club, based out of Riverview..Cassidy Balfour also qualified for the New Brunswick swim team, and Colson Mersereau is an alternate.

The Canada Games are being held July 28th to August 13th…

For other up and coming swimmers, Douthwright says, “Try your hardest. It’s not about the person beside you that matters, it is what you are doing that matters. If you are practicing, if someone is going faster than you, as long as you are trying your hardest that is what is important. Keep working hard, and maybe one day you will be faster than them, as long as you keep going, you will see the results eventually.”
